If it's free, ask what you're exchanging for access. Often the answer is your data — the patterns in how you talk, what you worry about, what you respond to. That data has enormous value for advertising, for training models, for selling back to you in ways that are hard to trace.
If it's ad-supported, the incentive is to keep you engaged long enough to see ads. That's not inherently evil, but it does mean the product's success is measured in your attention, not your wellbeing.

- Is there a memory that serves you, or one that serves the model?
- Can you delete your data?
- Does it tell you, plainly, what it does and doesn't do with what you share?
These aren't philosophical questions. They're product questions. And the answers reveal a lot.
The Relationship You Have With Technology Is a Choice
Most people haven't consciously chosen their relationship with AI — they've just adopted what's available and popular. But the choices are real, and they have consequences.
